The Yekuana Indians are involved in making beautifully intricate basket weaving. The Yekuana are the tribe described by South Americans as “finished,” meaning that they have an advanced culture. The Yekuana Indians are a very advanced culture and are considered to be both intelligent and kind. They are best known for the bongos they create. The Indians take large trees and burn the centers out of them to create bongos or canoes. These are used for travel and are also made for their own village and even for surrounding villages.
"There is the one (great spirit) who created all of the baskets, and the baskets began to walk, and they entered the water after eating many Indians. They are the cayman alligators-you've only got to look at their skins to see that. An Indian doctor saw this spirit creating the first basket, and he managed to escape in time to avoid being eaten. It was a Yekuana.
Designs vary by maker and convey a complex geometry. Some designs represent sacred animals such as anacondas, peccaries, and frogs that figure prominently in their myths.
